Under the supervision of Professor Christopher Wallis, research was conducted on extracts of roseroot (Rhodiola rosea L.) and maral root (Rhaponticum carthamoides). Together with the host team, Dr Styczyńska developed and optimised analytical procedures covering sample preparation, fractionation, chromatographic separation and data interpretation. The work involved the Büchi Pure C-850 FlashPrep system.
A key outcome of the mission was the development of HPLC methodologies complemented by rapid spectrophotometric assays. For roseroot, the methods targeted phenylethanoids, including salidroside and tyrosol, as well as phenylpropanoids, measured as total rosavins. For maral root, a method was established to determine total ecdysteroid content. These approaches will enable faster preliminary screening of plant extracts and facilitate the comparison of results obtained through different analytical techniques.
The mission also created an opportunity for scientific exchange. Dr Styczyńska presented the research profile of Department of Vegetable and Medicinal Plants and its work on medicinal and aromatic plants to the Cardiff team. The visit resulted in the establishment of scientific cooperation between WULS and Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Preparations for a joint scientific publication based on the methods developed during the mission have already begun. Both teams also plan to continue validating and refining the procedures, conduct joint analyses and explore further exchange opportunities, including student mobility through the Erasmus+ programme. All core activities planned for the mission were completed successfully.
