From Fieldwork to Laboratory Research: An STSM in Zaragoza

As part of WeedingMAPs and COST Action CA23123, Anamarija Križanac completed a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at the Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentaria de Aragón in Zaragoza, Spain. The mission brought together fieldwork, plant processing and laboratory research on medicinal and aromatic plants.

From 6 to 19 July 2026, Anamarija Križanac from CEKOM 3LJ worked with researchers at the Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentaria de Aragón (CITA) in Zaragoza. The mission provided practical insight into different stages of research on medicinal and aromatic plants.

The fieldwork included lavender sampling and visits to lavender and winter savory (Satureja montana) plantations. These activities offered insight into cultivation practices, harvesting and sustainable plantation management. They also showed how medicinal and aromatic plants can support rural development and create new opportunities for local communities.

Another focus of the mission was the distillation of sage (Salvia officinalis) for essential oil production. Anamarija followed the process at both laboratory and semi-industrial scales and visited processing facilities. This provided a closer look at the steps involved in processing plant material and at ways of using plant materials and by-products to develop value-added products.

Laboratory activities focused on the analysis of essential oils and plant extracts and the assessment of their functional properties. The mission also provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge with researchers from different fields and to establish new professional contacts.

The experience strengthened Anamarija's practical skills and provided new perspectives for her work at CEKOM 3LJ. It also laid the groundwork for further cooperation between CEKOM 3LJ and CITA and future joint research activities within WeedingMAPs.
