Laimburg Research Centre

The Laimburg Research Centre is an applied research institute for agriculture and food processing in South Tyrol, Italy. Since 1975, it has been developing innovative solutions for the agri-food chain, promoting sustainable cultivation and processing of high-quality local products. Its aim is to have a positive impact on South Tyrolean businesses by improving resource management and market competitiveness. Laimburg Research Centre focuses on crops adapted to the local context, such as apples, vines, vegetables, small and stone fruits, nuts, cereals, herbs and fodder. Research activities are based on sustainable and resilient management strategies to protect local biodiversity and natural resources such as water and soil, especially in the face of climate change, which is particularly severe in mountain areas.

Role in the project

At the Laimburg Research Centre, our group works to help growers produce competitive, high-quality organic herbs. We focus on selecting suitable growing sites, optimising cultivation strategies and researching crop protection methods to ensure sustainable and profitable production for the benefit of mountain farms in the region.

Alessia Castellan

As a young researcher and deputy leader of working group 1 (state of the art), I contribute to the COST Action project on non-chemical weed management by applying my expertise in sustainable weed management. My knowledge comes from a recent literature review conducted as part of an internal project at my research centre, as well as from my background in agriculture, chemistry and herbology - developed through both academic studies and professional experience over the years.

Manuel Pramsohler

At the Laimburg Research Centre, I lead the working group on medicinal and aromatic plants. Our team conducts applied research to assess the suitability of MAP plants for cultivation in both low and high altitude mountainous regions. We focus on the development of cultivation techniques and effective crop management practices. As part of the COST action on non-chemical weed management, I contribute to WG1, which focuses on the state of the art in this field. I am also a member of the Management Committee (MC) and co-lead the role of Grant Awarding Coordinator for COST Action CA23123.
